KUALA LUMPUR:
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh today said that her 2017 biography had never been banned by the government despite claims it was driving a “Christian agenda”.

She also reiterated that “Becoming Hannah, A Personal Journey” was about her life journey and involvement in politics.

“The book has been reprinted many times over the years, and the home ministry has never banned it,” she said when testifying in a lawsuit against Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff at the High Court here today.

“For the defendant (Kamarul) to say that I had a motive to ‘proselytise Christianity through my politics’ is a personal and unprovoked attack on my character,” Yeoh said, adding that her biography did not delve into any political ideologies.

Yeoh filed the suit in 2022 over two Facebook posts uploaded by Kamarul in May 2017, where he alleged that the Segambut MP “has a motive to proselytise Christianity through her politics”.

Kamarul, who was a special officer to the prime minister from 2021 to 2022, also cited Yeoh’s biography which he said was driving a “Christian agenda”.

Yeoh said the lecturer had also claimed that she “intends to convert Malaysia into a Christian country”.

Natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad also testified in court today, saying he had issued a statement to defend Yeoh in 2017 after Kamarul criticised her biography.

Nik Nazmi told the court that he came to know Yeoh after they were elected to the Selangor state assembly in 2008, following which they were appointed as state speaker and deputy speaker.

He said he had read Yeoh’s biography at the time it was published.

“I find it inspiring, but it does not ‘influence’ me to convert (to Christianity),” he said.

Yeoh is seeking general, aggravated, and exemplary damages from Kamarul.

The hearing continues before Justice Aliza Sulaiman on Jan 14, 2025.
