PETALING JAYA:
A total of 1,354 cases of out-of-wedlock teenage pregnancies were reported in the state from January 2023 till September this year, the Selangor state legislative assembly was told today.

State women’s development and social welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said according to the Selangor health department, 799 cases were reported in 2023 and another 555 cases for the first nine months of this year, Bernama reported.

“For this year, until September, Selangor recorded 555 cases — 13 in the 10-14 age group, 157 aged 15 to 17, and 385 aged between 18 and 19,” she said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2025.

She said to address the issue, a roundtable discussion on tackling out-of-wedlock teenage pregnancy would be held in the first quarter of next year.

Wanita Berdaya Selangor, in collaboration with the Selangor welfare services department and the Bayt Al-Rahmah Welfare Association, will be organising this roundtable to come up with comprehensive solutions, she said.

Anfaal said the government viewed this as a serious issue as it involved children and teenagers aged under 18.

The state has also launched a child protection advocacy programme, in collaboration with the Selangor welfare services department, Selangor education department, police, and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

This programme is aimed at educating children on safety and protection from sexual harassment.

A total of 12 sessions were held, mostly at schools across all districts and one at the Hicom People’s Housing Project children’s activity centre.
