PETALING JAYA:
Component parties of the unity government in Negeri Sembilan will hold discussions on a proposal to limit the term of the menteri besar to two terms.

Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said the matter was brought to the state legislative assembly in 2021 but failed to secure the required two-thirds majority support from assemblymen, Berita Harian reported.

“If we want to proceed with the proposal, it must be revisited and discussed within the unity government.

“This also means that all states need to implement it together,” he was quoted as saying following the weekly state executive council meeting at Wisma Negeri, Seremban, today.

He was responding to a question on earlier proposals by Pakatan Harapan (PH) to implement a two-term limit for the menteri besar, which was part of the coalition’s manifesto in the 2018 general election (GE14).

The amendment to the state constitution to limit the term of the menteri besar was tabled in early December 2021. Nineteen assemblymen voted in favour, 13 opposed, while four were absent during the vote.

However, Aminuddin, who is also Negeri Sembilan PH chief, said the coalition remains committed to fulfilling this manifesto pledge.

“Everyone knows this was previously a PH government policy that was rejected, so we need to revisit it within PH,” he said.

Separately, Aminuddin expressed hope that the federal government would approve the proposed Madani Highway project connecting Seremban and Kuala Pilah to address severe congestion issues along the route.

He said the route frequently experienced severe traffic jams, particularly on weekends and during festive seasons.

“This highway is expected to connect Seremban to Kuala Pilah, Serting and Temerloh (in Pahang), and we hope it will become a reality.

“Given the current situation on the route to Kuala Pilah, this highway is necessary and will also help reduce congestion on the Karak Highway,” he said.
