Dr M and wife pay last respects to Daim

Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, were at Daim Zainuddin’s residence in Bukit Tunku here today to pay their last respects to the former finance minister.

The couple arrived at about 12.50pm and spent about 30 minutes paying their respects to the late Daim.

Also present to pay their last respects to the former two-term finance minister were opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal were also spotted.

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof greeting a family member of the late Daim Zainuddin at the former finance minister’s residence in Persiaran Bukit Tunku.

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof arrived later at about 1.30pm.

Despite never having worked with him before, Fadillah said, Daim had made immense contributions to Malaysia during his stints in the government and in the area of business.

“Although I have never worked in the same government as him, he had contributed greatly to the country. We pray for the best for the family members and for them to be given strength during this difficult time,” the senior Gabungan Parti Sarawak leader told reporters.

Daim died at the age of 86 this morning. He breathed his last at 8.21am at Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya.

Funeral prayers are expected to be held at about 5pm at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur.
