Perhilitan relocates sun bear, black panther in Kelantan

They were captured after complaints that they were entering farms and harming animals or crops in Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.

Perhilitan said the capture and relocation of these animals were not long-term solutions as orchards were situated near permanent forest reserves, which served as the original habitat for the wildlife. (Perhilitan pic)
PETALING JAYA:
The Kelantan wildlife protection and national parks department (Perhilitan) yesterday relocated a sun bear and a black panther that had wandered into farms.

This followed complaints from residents and orchard owners, said state Perhilitan director Hafid Rohani, Bernama reported.

The sun bear was captured in Kampung Sungai Pas, Kuala Krai, while the black panther was caught at a plantation in Kuala Koh, Gua Musang.

Hafid said the panther had allegedly been harming cattle in the plantation area.

Both animals were captured in traps set up by Perhilitan officers.

“Their capture brings some relief to the residents in the affected areas and helps prevent further losses resulting from crop destruction and property damage,” Hafid said.

He said the capture and relocation of the animals were not long-term solutions as the orchards were situated near permanent forest reserves, which served as the original habitat for the wildlife.

He said any complaints on wildlife could be directed to Perhilitan by contacting 1-800-88-5151 or through e-complaints at www.wildlife.gov.my.
