PETALING JAYA:
Lawyer Zaid Ibrahim, who at one point represented Najib Razak in his SRC International case’s final appeal, has lauded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for welcoming the former Pekan MP’s apology over the 1MDB fiasco.

“Anwar has proven once again that he is a generous and compassionate man,” Zaid said in a post on X.

While some had criticised the former prime minister’s apology for being insincere, the ex-law minister dismissed their views and said Najib’s apology was “good enough for me”.

Zaid added that what was more important was what Anwar, as the prime minister, thought about the matter.

“Our judges were all convinced he was guilty, but that does not mean we cannot have a different opinion. He is after all serving his sentence, so why quibble about his apology? Whether sincere or otherwise.

“What is important is what the prime minister thinks about the matter. That’s the key to the issue of Umno and Najib’s future. I am now beginning to like Anwar,” said the former Kota Bharu MP.

In a statement read by his son, Nizar, yesterday, Najib said he had reflected on the 1MDB fiasco over the past 26 months, and it pained him that it happened when he was the prime minister and finance minister.

“… and I would like to apologise unreservedly,” he had said.

He also denied being the mastermind or collaborating with fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, in the scheme.

When asked to comment on the apology earlier today, Anwar simply told reporters: “I welcome it (terima baik).”

However, former deputy law minister Hanipa Maidin, from Amanah, said he could not accept Anwar’s response.

“The prime minister has welcomed Najib’s apology over the 1MDB scandal. With all due respect, I don’t think you represent all of us!” the former Sepang MP said in a Facebook post.
