Cabinet did not discuss inheritance tax, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR:
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook has denied rumours that the government is seeking to table several new taxes, including the inheritance tax, in Budget 2025.

The DAP secretary-general said claims that the government was planning to implement an inheritance tax were just “assumptions” by financial analysts.

He advised the public to just wait for official announcements on the matter when the 2025 budget is tabled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also finance minister, on Friday.

“I want to take this opportunity to inform everyone here that I have not heard of this suggestion in any Cabinet meeting. Do not easily believe in assumptions,” Loke said in his speech at the Federal Territory DAP convention here today.

“Government policies will only become official if they are tabled in Parliament. There have been no discussions about inheritance tax.”

According to the Dewan Rakyat calendar, the tabling of the Supply Bill 2025 (budget speech) is scheduled for 4pm on Friday. The bill will be debated at the policy level from Oct 28 to Nov 5, followed by responses from ministers over the subsequent four days.

An inheritance tax was reported to be among five new taxes proposed. It would be levied on the assets or wealth inherited by beneficiaries after one’s death.

On Tuesday, the National House Buyers Association said an inheritance tax would be unfair to property owners, especially those who have invested in real estate for their future generations.

Anwar previously said the 2025 budget will introduce more economic structural reforms aimed at ensuring that the benefits of faster economic growth are shared by as many people as possible.
