Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said service providers also have two months to register with MCMC.
“If they fail to register, legal action can be taken against them,” Utusan Malaysia quoted him as saying at a press conference at Kompleks Dayabumi in Kuala Lumpur today.
Fahmi had previously announced that MCMC was developing a code of conduct that would guide social media platforms on the actions that could be taken against users who flouted the said code.
He said the first round of discussions regarding the code was held on Sept 3.
Fahmi also said MCMC was closely following developments related to pornography and sexual crimes involving Telegram, and that it had held several discussions with the company.
“The government does not wish to arrest the staff of any social media platform, including messaging services such as Telegram, provided they cooperate well,” he was reported as saying.
