SEOUL:
Malaysia will study the use of different spectrums and frequencies as used in South Korea to overcome the problem of internet coverage in buildings, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the effectiveness of the method has been proven in South Korea, which also faced the same problem before.

He said South Korean mobile network operator LG U+ informed him of a solution that involves one frequency per spectrum, so he will ask MCMC to see if the findings and views of LG U+ can be used in Malaysia.

“We will work on a proof-of-concept,” he said.

Earlier, Fahmi held a meeting with LG U+ executive vice-president Johan Sue-hyun Chung and senior officials of the company, and attended a briefing on the status of 5G network coverage in South Korea.

Also present was Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng.

Fahmi also asked Telekom Malaysia and LG U+ to look at potential cooperation in 5G implementation, especially for local companies in the industrial and enterprise sectors.

Fahmi is on a three-day working visit to South Korea. Among others, he will deliver a keynote address at the GSMA Mobile 360 APAC conference and explore new collaboration opportunities in the film industry.
