Daim’s wife reports MACC’s ‘power abuse’ following Bloomberg article

The US media company claimed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had told MACC chief Azam Baki to probe into the ex-finance minister.

PETALING JAYA:
Naimah Khalid, wife of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, has filed a police report over a Bloomberg article about the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigations into her husband’s affairs.

Citing sources, Bloomberg reported that MACC chief Azam Baki told agency officials that instructions to investigate Daim, as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons, had come from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim himself.

Naimah said the Bloomberg report showed the charges against Daim and her were a conspiracy to target Anwar’s political opponents by “subverting the institutions of state and enforcement bodies”.

“It is an open secret that Daim and I have been subjected to politically motivated investigations and trumped-up charges instigated by Anwar Ibrahim,” she told reporters after filing her report at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters today.

“Consumed by his unending political vendetta against Daim, Anwar has not hesitated to abuse the powers of his office to achieve his ends.

“We want justice. We want a criminal investigation into abuse of power, conspiracy and criminal conduct by Anwar.”

Meanwhile, Naimah’s lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan claimed they were told by a Special Branch officer not to reveal the police report to anyone.

“This is completely unnecessary. Why is a Special Branch officer giving us such directions? Why is this police report getting special treatment?

“This is not right. We want a fair and independent probe without interference from any parties,” he said.

Earlier this year, Daim claimed trial to a charge under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009 of failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice.

Naimah was accused under the same provision of failing to declare her ownership of various companies, several plots of land and two vehicles.

Both the Prime Minister’s Office and MACC have denied the claims made in the Bloomberg report.
