The Umno stronghold has fallen out of BN’s hands only once, in the 2018 general election, when Pakatan Harapan’s Said Jonit (Amanah) defeated two-term assemblyman Jais Sarday with a majority of 1,668 votes.

Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain regained the seat for Umno during the 2022 state election, defeating candidates from PH, PN and Warisan with a 5,166-vote majority.

Today’s by-election was called following Sharifah’s death on Aug 2.
