The Perikatan Nasional chairman reiterated that development funds should be given to all MPs equally without the need for a memorandum of understanding to be negotiated or signed.
“Who is causing losses to the people? Us? It’s them, because they didn’t give (funds) to us. The areas we manage don’t have funds allocated to help the people,” he told reporters when met on the Mahkota by-election campaign trail here today.
The Bersatu president said the unity government should emulate the PN-led states of Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan, which allocate funds to opposition assemblymen.
The fourth PAS-governed state, Terengganu, does not have any opposition assemblymen.
Muhyiddin also said it was pointless for PN to negotiate the MoU with the government and that the coalition was ready to move on.
“It’s okay, if you don’t give it to us we can continue to fight for the cause of the people. We will do what we can,” said the Pagoh MP.
On Sunday, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin announced that PN had unanimously rejected the draft MoU claiming it went against the Federal Constitution.
Hamzah said the draft violated the constitution by including conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras, and stipulations that allegedly went against traditional, cultural and moral values.
On Tuesday, Muhyiddin singled out a clause that purportedly prohibits discussing issues related to race, religion and royalty (3Rs), claiming it would restrict the MPs’ freedom to voice their constituents’ concerns, especially on such issues.
While the government has insisted that it was open to talks on the MoU, PN has since said the opposition would not move forward with discussions as long as they were based on the current draft MoU.
