PADANG BESAR:
The customs department has foiled an attempt to smuggle 73,319kg of methamphetamine worth RM2,346,208 into the country at the Padang Besar immigration, customs, quarantine and security complex.

Perlis customs director Ismail Hashim said the drugs were seized from a sports utility vehicle with Thai registration number plates that was detained at the special passenger inspection unit on Sept 3.

He said the driver, believed to be a Thai national, disappeared while the inspection was being carried out.

Customs officers found 56 Chinese tea packets labelled “Guanginwang” in a special compartment under the rear passenger seat.

“Also found were 14 black packages hidden in a special compartment on the floor. After further inspection, the black packages were suspected to contain methamphetamine,” he told reporters here today.
