Bernama reported Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain as saying police took a statement today from an Indonesian blogger who had written about the case.
He added that police were also investigating the company accounts of several people purportedly involved in the case.
“In addition to the politician, her husband and the blogger, statements were recorded from two people with an NGO today,” he told Bernama.
Berita Harian also reported Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain as saying Mashitah had been in Myanmar for property investment purposes in Myawaddy.
According to Bernama, Razarudin confirmed this but said the police investigation into the case is still ongoing.
He said the investigation is being conducted by the Bukit Aman criminal investigation department under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
He also urged the public to refrain from speculating on the matter and to allow the police to complete their investigation.
Last Thursday, Mashitah lodged a police report over the allegations linking her to the human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar, denying involvement in such activities and saying the allegations were “sourced from sensationalist Indonesian media”.
The day before, the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate allegations of a local politician’s involvement with a human trafficking syndicate in Myanmar.
MHO secretary-general Hishamuddin Hashim said this followed a viral video claiming the politician and her husband were actively involved in the syndicate.
