PETALING JAYA:
A police veterans group has called on the government to give retired policemen a lifetime monthly allowance of RM500 and free healthcare at government hospitals and clinics.

Its representative, Hussin Awang Ngah, said these were among the association’s seven recommendations submitted to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, for consideration in the 2025 federal budget.

Hussin said the RM500 allowance should be given across the board regardless of how long the policeman had served or whether they had a pension or not.

“This would signify the government’s appreciation for their services in protecting the peace of the country, and would help them cover expenditures related to their welfare,” he said in a statement today.

He also said public healthcare facilities should prioritise all retired policemen for both appointments and treatment, and suggested that the government set up special public hospitals for family members of policemen and veterans.

Hussin also called for a police veterans affairs department to be established under the home ministry or the Prime Minister’s Department to ensure the wellbeing of all retired personnel.

Police veterans affairs are currently under Bukit Aman’s management department.

“The distribution of grants to police veterans group for their administration and activities should be of a fixed and even amount.

“Also, all police veterans should be automatically awarded a medal, with no conditions and regardless of the number of years in the force. This should extend to the police volunteer reserve corps, so that they would feel appreciated for their contributions,” he said.

Hussin also proposed a police university for both policemen and veterans to further their studies at a subsidised cost.

“We hope these requests would be studied and considered in the 2025 budget,” he said.
