PETALING JAYA:
A construction labourer was sentenced to four months’ jail and fined RM10,000, in default two months’ jail, at the sessions court in Alor Setar today after pleading guilty to offering a bribe to a police officer in Langkawi last December.

Isham Desa, 36, pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him before judge N Priscilla Hemamalini, reported Sinar Harian.

Isham was accused of offering the officer at the Kuah police station RM1,000 as an inducement to not take action against him for possessing methamphetamine and heroin.

He was accused of committing the offence while in a vehicle outside a 24-hour convenience store at Taman Sri Langkawi, Jalan Matsirat, at 2.30am on Dec 27.

The charge was framed under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009, punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, with imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

The prosecution was handled by MACC’s prosecution officer Zulfadli Azharudin and deputy public prosecutor Noor Azura Zulkiflee. Isham was not represented.
