Farah was commenting on recent fatal accidents involving children where a 12-year-old’s three-wheel motorcycle accident caused a toddler’s death in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, and two 13-year-olds were killed while performing wheelie stunts in Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam.
“The deaths of these children were not merely accidents or matters of fate. They could have been prevented if their parents or guardians had exercised caution and supervised them,” she said in a statement today.
Citing the growing number of road deaths and injuries among child motorcycle victims in 2023, Farah said these incidents highlighted the failure in monitoring children’s activities.
As such, she urged the transport ministry and road transport department to expedite the drafting of a new law to regulate the purchase of motorcycles by unlicensed riders.
She also called on the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to provide an update on a new category of motorcycle licence aimed at youths.
In 2019, a proposal for a new motorcycle licence category, B3, aimed at restricting individuals aged 16 to 20 to electric bikes and low-powered mopeds, was put forward.
“This proposal was considered and, in 2021, Miros endorsed a recommendation to study the idea,” Farah said.
“However, the status of this study remains unclear to date.”
