The custody order was granted by magistrate Syafiq Sulaiman at a hearing attended by the Selangor social welfare department and lawyer Nurul Ikrimah Mohd Raya, who represented Zayn Rayyan’s family.
Nurul Ikrimah said Zayn Rayyan’s parents, Zahari Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, both 29, would be allowed to see the boy once a week, under the supervision of a designated guardian, for not more than eight hours.
The court also permitted Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira to make video calls at any time and required them to take the child for special therapy once a month.
The Selangor welfare department had previously obtained a two-month temporary custody order for the child after the parents were charged on June 13 with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner that could cause physical harm.
Zayn Rayyan was found dead in a stream, near his home at the Idaman apartments in Damansara Damai a day after he was reported missing.
The post-mortem revealed that the child had sustained injuries to his neck and body, suggesting that he may have acted in self-defence against the killer.
