The DAP MP pointed out that 10 such high-density developments had been approved by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in the six-year period, comprising a total of 5,887 units of homes.
Kok said this influx of new homes would overwhelm the area, all the more if another proposed high-density mixed development goes ahead.
“If the proposed development is approved, the number of new homes will rise to 8,299 units,” she said in a statement, adding that she sent an official letter of protest to DBKL’s planning department yesterday over the proposed development.
DBKL reportedly decided to sell 2.5ha (6.17 acres) of land at Taman Desa to Mah Sing Group Bhd for a high-density housing development.
The company plans to develop the land in two phases, with the first phase involving more than 1,600 serviced apartments named M Aspira on 3.7 acres. The second phase will see the construction of 800 Residensi Madani affordable homes on the remaining 2.47 acres.
Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the sale of the land was conducted through open tender, and aimed at ensuring the construction of 800 affordable housing units at the developer’s expense.
Kok said the existing roads in Taman Desa, such as Jalan Desa and Jalan Desa Bakti, would not be able to handle the increased traffic if the project is approved.
“Will the developer provide additional access points? What is Mah Sing Group’s plan to reduce traffic congestion?” she asked.
She pointed out that schools in Taman Desa were already at full capacity and could not accommodate more students.
Kok also said the proposed development could compromise the nearby Danau Desa flood retention pond.
She called on DBKL and Zaliha to consider the residents’ appeals and cancel the high-density project to preserve Taman Desa’s livability.
