KUALA LUMPUR:
The government will form a gig economy commission in two months’ time and place it under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department.

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the commission would oversee matters involving the welfare of e-hailing and p-hailing workers, as well as part-time employees and semi-professionals.

He added that a bill related to the welfare of gig workers is set to be tabled for first reading at the following Dewan Rakyat meeting, which will take place from October to December.

Zahid said the enactment of this law was necessary as only about 250,000 of the 1.16 million gig workers in Malaysia currently contribute to the Social Security Organisation.

“Therefore, we have decided that a new act to cover gig workers will be tabled by the human resources minister (Steven Sim) at the next Parliament sitting,” he said at a press conference joined by Sim.
