Apart from clogging up drainpipes, organic wastes such as leftover food produce gaseous molecules that can cause shortness of breath, headaches and eye irritation.
These are symptoms of a condition that can lead to death if not contained quickly.
At the same time, unclogging drainpipes is an expensive operation. At RM300 per pipe, it can cut deep into any business’s profit margin.
Now there is a way to solve these dual problems at a lower cost, and it comes in the form of a lab-grown micro-organism.

The microbes serve two main functions, according to Mervin Chan, CEO of BioecoM, the company that produces the micro-organism.
“They break down organic wastes such as fats, oils, proteins and starches that may be caught in grease traps and drains, and consume the harmful bacteria that cause the unpleasant odour emanating from the wastes,” he told FMT.
The principle is simple. The microbes act as the catalyst to quicken decomposition, making the process twice as fast.
“When the waste material has decomposed, it not only leaves the pipes clear but also eliminates the harmful bacteria that cause the odour,” Chan said.
Apart from improving air quality, it reduces the frequency of mechanical treatments to unclog the pipes, therefore cutting costs to businesses.
Better yet, the process does not lead to the production of any harmful by-product.
“The microbe, marketed as both BioEco Clean and BioEco Odor to signify its dual function, is equally suited for treating wastewater and solid wastes,” he added.
Overall, Chan said, the microbes contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
“This helps to improve productivity in the workplace, thus helping businesses to maximise profits,” he said.
The company has already received positive feedback from its customers.
“Many companies have highlighted the cost-saving benefits and enhanced efficiency that our product has brought them,” Chan said.
BioecoM products have been tested on waste management sites in various parts of the world, including Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
