The Petronas Gas Bhd site at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) construction area in Kerteh, where a butane gas leak was reported, has been declared safe.

Kemaman police chief Razi Rosli said gas detectors installed by the fire and rescue department and Petronas at eight locations showed zero readings this afternoon.

He said police had allowed 21 occupants of the Al-Muqarabbin Tahfiz Centre, who were relocated to a safer location on Sunday, to return and resume their activities.

“As of noon today, all detectors recorded zero readings, including the area near the tunnel.

“With these latest readings, the situation has been confirmed to be under control and safe. The community in the surrounding area need not worry and may go about their daily activities as usual,” he said in a statement today.

However, Razi said the authorities would continue monitoring the site, and advised the public not to approach the area and to comply with safety instructions.
