Azalina to table motion against Wan Saiful on Monday

The motion seeks to refer him to the rights and privileges committee over his claim that court charges against him could be dropped if he declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The motion, to be tabled by law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said, seeks to refer Wan Saiful Wan Jan to the rights and privileges committee.
PETALING JAYA:
A motion to refer Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee is expected to be tabled in the house on Monday.

The motion is over Wan Saiful’s claim that court charges brought against him could be dropped if he declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Wan Saiful, a member of the Bersatu Supreme Council, has been charged with money laundering and corruption related to the Jana Wibawa scheme.

The motion to refer him to the rights and privileges committee is listed on the order paper for Monday’s sitting of the Dewan Rakyat. The motion will be tabled by law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said after Question Time.

The motion said Wan Saiful’s statements, made in the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 28 and March 21, “implicitly claims that individuals purportedly acting for the government could manipulate to drop or dismiss the court charges against him”.

The motion said that Wan Saiful’s remarks on matters currently under court consideration “could be construed as detrimental to the interests of the parties in the case”.

The motion calls for him to be referred to the rights and privileges committee to determine whether his statements were misleading and damaging to the interests of the parties in the case, and to take any necessary action.”

On March 22, Tanjong Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi submitted a motion to refer Wan Saiful to the committee after he claimed in the Dewan Rakyat that Zulkafperi and Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim attempted to persuade him to support Anwar.

Zulkafperi said Wan Saiful’s claim was a “malicious attempt” to mislead the house, Bernama reported.

FMT has sought comment from Wan Saiful.
