Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the three-month trial would only involve Malaysians travelling to Singapore by bus at BSI and motorcyclists using the automated MBike immigration clearance system at KSAB.
“If the first phase of the QR code trial runs smoothly, we will extend its use to Malaysian private vehicle users before expanding it to foreigners,” he said in a Berita Harian report.
He was speaking to reporters after a visit to the customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex at BSI this morning.
In December, Johor proposed that the federal government introduce a QR code system at the CIQs in the state, something that neighbouring Singapore has already done.
Putrajaya and Singapore also said in January that passport-free travel was among the initiatives they were looking to implement to support the development of the Johor-Singapore special economic zone.
