Teen sent flying while fleeing cops dies in ICU

PETALING JAYA:
The teenage motorcyclist who crashed into a police vehicle while trying to flee the cops for illegal racing yesterday has died in intensive care.

According to Bernama, Melaka police chief Zainol Samah said Khairul Basahri, 18, died at the intensive care unit of Melaka Hospital, where he was being treated, just past midnight at 12.37am.

Zainol said Khairul succumbed to internal injuries. He had broken his leg in the incident which took place early yesterday morning.

Zainol previously said that the incident occurred at about 2.56am at Jalan Gangsa Kesang, Durian Tunggal, while the police vehicle was involved in an operation to curb illegal racing.

Khairul was sent flying after crashing into the police vehicle while it was attempting to make a right turn.

The case is being probed for driving recklessly without due care and attention under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for up to a year in jail and a maximum fine of RM10,000, upon conviction.
