PETALING JAYA:
The driver of a car that mowed down six Pakistanis, killing three of them, in Teluk Intan, Perak, yesterday has lodged a police report after he was beaten up by the public.

Hilir Perak police chief Ahmad Adnan Basri said the 36-year-old man, who tested positive for cannabis, filed a report at 1pm today after suffering head injuries.

“We have identified four people involved in beating him up, all of whom are believed to be friends of the victims.

“The four Pakistanis who beat the driver were arrested at 4.20pm today by the police.

“The incident is said to have taken place right after the crash. They stopped as soon as the police arrived.”

An investigation is being held under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.

The motorist has been arrested and placed under remand.

Adnan said he will be charged at the Teluk Intan magistrates’ court tomorrow under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for consuming drugs.

The investigation under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and causing death will be referred to prosecutors, he said.

The six Pakistanis were walking to perform their morning prayers at a nearby mosque yesterday when they were hit by the Proton Saga driven by the man.

Adnan said an initial investigation showed that the driver lost control of his car, which skidded to the shoulder of the road where the six were walking.

The three seriously injured men were sent to Teluk Intan Hospital.
