JPJ records RM5bil in revenue for 2023

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook says earnings from vehicle registration surged by 13.6%, from RM 501.5 million in 2022 to RM569.6 million last year.

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said there are plans to launch more special number plate series to boost the government’s revenue.
PUTRAJAYA:
The road transport department (JPJ) recorded RM5.07 billion in revenue in 2023, up 3.53% from RM4.90 billion in 2022, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said revenue from vehicle registration amounted to RM569.6 million in 2023, marking a 13.6% increase from RM501.5 million in 2022.

“For the GOLD series launched in conjunction with the 50th Golden Jubilee celebration of Federal Territory Day on Feb 1, JPJ generated over RM17.24 million in revenue,” he told a press conference today, adding that it attracted 23,160 bidders for the series.

“Fifty per cent of the revenue from the special number plate series will be allocated to initiatives under the ministry for 2024, such as driving licence assistance, helmet assistance, FlySISWA subsidies, and Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions for taxi drivers.”

He said the ministry will launch more special number plate series in the future to boost revenue.

On Socso contributions for taxi drivers, Loke said the finance ministry has allocated RM100 million to cover 90% of the contributions, with the remaining 10% as self-contribution.

“We see that when it’s not a 100% contribution, some might not contribute because they need to register and pay the remaining 10%

“So, the transport ministry will contribute the remaining to Socso. The drivers will not have to pay a single sen. All they have to do is to register with Socso,” he said.

The programme, scheduled to be launched in March, is expected to benefit some 35,000 taxi drivers and 18,000 bus drivers.

“I have requested the Land Public Transport Agency to provide a list of taxi drivers’ databases to Socso, which will soon be consolidated with those of Socso,” he said.

Port Klang achieves record container volume

Loke said Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), two of the world’s busiest ports, performed well in 2023.

Port Klang handled a record 14.06 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) compared to 13.22 million TEUs in 2022, while PTP saw a slight decrease to 10.48 million TEUs from 10.51 million TEUs.

“The ratio of transshipment cargo to local cargo at Port Klang changed from 70:30 in 2014 to 55:45 in 2023,” he said, attributing this shift to Malaysia’s growing manufacturing, construction and service sectors.
