Bernama quoted Selangor deputy police chief S Sasikala Devi as saying that 689 summonses were issued to students from two Petaling Jaya schools since January.
These students, aged 13 to 17, were also found riding modified motorcycles, bikes with expired road tax as well as not using helmets.
To address the issue, Sasikala said police have organised awareness programmes on traffic and criminal offences through Op Didik, she said at a Prihatin Driver’s Licence Programme for schoolchildren at SMK Taman Medan here today.
Sasikala presented free learner’s driving licences (L licence) to 100 students of SMK Taman Medan and SMK Taman Datuk Harun as well as children of the Petaling Jaya police headquarters staff to ensure they have a valid motorcycle licence.
She said this was a collaborative effort with the district police, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, the road transport department, the district education office and Safety Driving Centre Sdn Bhd.
“This is a pilot project and, hopefully, it may continue depending on the sponsorship of all related parties,” she added.
