Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Ahmad would be replaced by former Telemung assemblyman Rozi Mamat, effective immediately.
This follows Terengganu Umno’s dismal performance in the 15th general election (GE15) last year and the state elections in August, where it failed to win a single parliamentary or state seat.
Its candidates in the Kuala Terengganu and Kemaman by-elections meanwhile suffered humiliating defeats as PAS romped to convincing victories.
Ahmad himself contested in GE15 and the state election, where he failed to defend his Kijal state seat after four consecutive terms and lost the race for the Kemaman parliamentary seat.
Asyraf also announced that Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi would take over as Johor Umno chief, effective immediately as well.
He takes over the post from Khaled Nordin, an Umno vice-president and the higher education minister.
“I want to thank Khaled and Ahmad for all of their sacrifice, effort and commitment in leading Johor Umno and Terengganu Umno all this while,” the Umno secretary-general said.
