Kelantan Perhilitan director Hafid Rohani said the investigation was carried out after police removed the victim’s body from the scene.

Before that, his office had been informed by the Gua Musang police headquarters of a report on the death of a rubber tapper believed to have been attacked by a wild animal.

“After a briefing at the Gua Musang police headquarters, a search-and-rescue team went to the scene at about 5pm.

“The investigation found that the species that attacked the victim was the striped tiger (panthera tigris jacksoni),” he said in a statement today.

Police identified the victim as Shabaini, 36, whose body was found with injuries to the front of the neck, with his right hand, two big toes and lower body dismembered.

Hafid said the department received a report on the sighting of a tiger in the area on Nov 20.

“An investigation was carried out at the location by the department on the same day. The workers were also advised to clear the plantation area of undergrowth and go out to work in groups,” he said.

He said the department had also taken proactive measures by installing 10 tiger traps and camera traps in hotspot areas in the district.
