Anwar said the unity government is committed to ensuring the socio-economic development of all citizens for a more equitable distribution of wealth. It will deliver assistance to those in need more promptly and efficiently.

“The nation’s blessings and prosperity must be fairly and justly experienced by all,” he said in his Deepavali message.

Anwar also quoted the Thirukural, a classic Tamil text authored by poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, highlighting the importance of good ethics and governance.

“Happiness that stems from good ethics and governance is the true blessing, and joy originating from unethical behaviour does not bring sustainable happiness.”

Anwar also said the observance of Deepavali serves as a means to cultivate a “Madani” Malaysia, emphasising the importance of nurturing mutual respect and maintaining harmony among the diverse ethnic groups.

“The cultural diversity of this country must continue to be upheld without being challenged by any party.

“Any attempt to weaken the pillars of our society must be countered with high moral values and character.”

The Hindu “festival of lights” falls on Sunday this year.

The government has announced that it had approved unrecorded leave for Deepavali for Hindu civil servants on Nov 14 (Tuesday) in states that observe Sunday as their weekend rest day.
