Commenting on Muda’s threat to withdraw support for the unity government if the Attorney-General’s Chambers does not provide a detailed explanation regarding the discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) given to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hassan said “the government will only lose its two-thirds majority in Parliament”.
“We will only lose the two-thirds majority. The government is still intact and strong, but it can no longer be arrogant and ignore the sentiments and demands of the people who support the ‘reformist government’,” he said.
Several MPs FMT spoke to also said the unity government will not be affected if Muda – with one seat in Parliament held by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman – withdraws its support for the government.
However, they acknowledged that it would disrupt efforts to approve motions that require the support of two-thirds of the MPs.
“I don’t think it will affect anything because they only have one seat, we just won’t have the two-thirds majority,” said Hulu Langat MP Sany Hamzan.
Jelebu MP Jalaluddin Alias said Muda’s action was unwarranted, considering that the court had made its decision on Zahid’s DNAA “according to due process”.
“The unity government should move on and place its trust in the leadership of the prime minister,” he said.
