PH-BN on track to win simple majority in Selangor, says Amirudin

Selangor Pakatan Harapan chief Amirudin Shari is confident the unity coalition can win at least 29 of the 56 seats in the state.

Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari says so far, the unity coalition can win at least 29 of the 56 seats up for grabs.
SHAH ALAM:
Selangor Pakatan Harapan chief Amirudin Shari believes the coalition and its ally Barisan Nasional are on track to win the Selangor state election by a simple majority.

He said based on his observations so far, the unity coalition can win at least 29 of the 56 seats up for grabs.

“We are hoping for a voter turnout of 80 to 85%, if that happens, we are confident of securing a two-thirds majority,” Amirudin told FMT in an interview.

“To me, and this is a conservative estimate, I believe 40 to 50% of Umno voters will support PH, if that happens I think we can win a two-thirds majority.”

Last week, research outfit Endeavour-MGC published a survey indicating that Selangor is likely to see an 85% voter turnout.

The survey, which involved 1,068 respondents from various races, said Perikatan Nasional could win the state if there is low voter turnout among non-Malays and if a third of PH-BN’s Malay voters back the opposition coalition.

However, Endeavour-MGC said this was unlikely.

Amirudin said his focus now was ensuring BN voters back PH candidates.

PN critically wounded

Amirudin said PN was now “critically wounded” after Bersatu Supreme Council member Faiz Na’aman quit the party.

Faiz had criticised the coalition leadership’s selection of candidates, an issue which also led to protests from Perikatan Nasional’s Hulu Selangor grassroots.

“There are no signs of sabotage in PH-BN, they are in high spirits,” said Amirudin, adding that the response to PN’s campaign in Selangor, including for its state chief Azmin Ali, was lacklustre.

Amirudin also said PN’s manifesto for Selangor offered too little for voters.

“They talk about a ‘new Selangor’, but what exactly is new? It is just a change of leadership and a couple of other changes. They did not commit to continuing programmes like Insan, a free insurance scheme.”

PH-BN on the other hand, has vowed to take Selangor to “the next level”, particularly with the construction of a new port in Pulau Carey, skills training and increased welfare programme, he said.
