I’m willing to shorten notice period for a no-confidence motion, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim dares the opposition to challenge his support in the Dewan Rakyat and vows not to repeat the actions of Muhyiddin Yassin.

Last December, Anwar Ibrahim won a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat after forming the new government.
SHAH ALAM:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says he doesn’t fear facing a no confidence motion and would even shorten the notice period if it’s tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar, who is also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said he would not be like former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“When there was a motion of no confidence against him, he called for an emergency,” he said at a ceramah here last night, referring to the Emergency proclamation in January 2021 which saw Parliament suspended for six months.

“If you want to challenge, be my guest. I can tell the (Dewan Rakyat) Speaker that the notice period does not have to be two weeks. Just three days would do.”

In December last year, Anwar won a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat after forming the new government.

After being appointed to the top post following the 15th general election (GE15), Anwar had pledged to table a motion of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat to prove his majority in Parliament.

However, the motion was debated by 12 MPs from the government and opposition blocs, with some also questioning the constitutionality of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by parties in the unity government as well as the rationale of having a vote of confidence.

Muhyiddin, who was the eighth prime minister, had received backlash for suspending Parliament sessions amid calls for him to step down from office.

The Bersatu chairman justified the shutdown by citing the risk of Covid-19 infections. He eventually lost the support of a majority of MPs as soon as the emergency was over and stepped down as prime minister in August 2021.
