Cops arrest man on suspicion of assaulting ex-assemblyman’s wife

District chief says the magistrate granted them a 3-day remand order to question the man for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

A factory supervisor has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a former assemblyman’s wife at a sundry shop in Bayan Lepas yesterday.

Southwest police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the 41-year-old man was picked up at 11.30pm last night and was brought before the magistrate this morning.

He said the magistrate granted police a three-day remand to question the suspect for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

“The factory worker was arrested at his house,” he told FMT.

Yesterday, Norhailee Rasid, 48, wife of outgoing Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz, filed a police report, saying she was attacked by a man at a sundry shop run by her family. The confrontation was captured on CCTV.

The man was reportedly upset after she reprimanded his daughter for shoplifting, she said in her report.

Yesterday, Azrul said the CCTV footage showed that a man struck Norhailee’s head twice and attempted to punch her.
