GEORGE TOWN:
Former Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said his wife was assaulted by a man after she reprimanded the man’s daughter for allegedly shoplifting.

Norhailee Rasid’s actions were said to have upset the man while they were at a sundry shop along Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, Bayan Lepas.

According to Azrul, Norhailee, 48, noticed a schoolgirl “discreetly stuffing” snacks into her bag at the shop, which is run by his family.

Concerned about the girl’s behaviour, she intervened and the child subsequently ran away.

Norhailee was later approached by “an agitated man” wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Azrul said CCTV footage showed that the man struck Norhailee twice on the head and attempted to punch her.

“I am not so concerned about the items taken from the shop — they were just snacks. We did not even run after the girl. But for a man to attack a woman like this is unacceptable,” he told FMT.

The man said to have assaulted the former assemblyman’s wife at a sundry shop in Bayan Lepas.

Azrul said his wife lodged a police report at the Bayan Lepas station and went to the hospital for a check-up.

When contacted, Southwest police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal confirmed a report had been made and that they would investigate the matter.
