PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for the Tok Bali water plant project and the replacement of water pipes in Bachok to be expedited to help solve Kelantan’s water problem.

Anwar said an allocation of RM500 million would be used for the projects, adding that this was part of the RM1.7 billion approved by the government for the state.

“I have agreed for an immediate allocation of RM1.7 billion to solve Kelantan’s water problem and have directed the relevant agencies to speed up these two projects,” he said in his speech at the At-Taqwa mosque in Tumpat today.

Anwar also thanked Kelantan menteri besar Ahmad Yakob for his willingness to discuss the issue with the unity government.

“We discussed flood and water supply problems. To solve all these issues, discussions between the two governments are needed,” he said, according to the New Straits Times.

Anwar said this proved that the unity government had never left out Kelantan as claimed by certain quarters.

“It is not true. Compared to other states, Kelantan received the highest allocation in the country,” he said.

Anwar said the government would also continue to carry out other development projects for Kelantan.

Earlier this month, Anwar said the federal government disagreed with Kelantan’s RM8 billion proposal to solve water woes and called on the PAS-led state government to reduce the figure.

He said the federal government also disagreed with the state’s proposal to build extensive water reserves.

Last month, Anwar said the government would resolve water problems faced by both Kelantan and Sabah by the end of the year.
