The former prime minister challenges Anwar Ibrahim to declare the wealth he amassed as deputy prime minister and finance minister.

Anwar Ibrahim wants former leaders, like Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to share their wealth with the Malay populace who they claim to champion.
PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had been accused of helping his cronies too, when he was in the Cabinet in the 1990s, says Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The former prime minister took to Twitter to challenge his former protege-turned-nemesis to declare the wealth that he (Anwar) had amassed during his tenure as deputy prime minister and finance minister.

Anwar served as deputy prime minister, under Mahathir’s administration, from 1993 to 1998, and as finance minister from 1991 to 1998.

“He tells past leaders to declare their wealth to aid the poor, but Anwar is the one who had helped his cronies previously,” the former Langkawi MP said.

Mahathir said this in response to Anwar calling upon Malay leaders and tycoons, whom he accused of amassing massive wealth over the years, to share their wealth with the Malay populace who they claim to champion.

He also challenged Anwar to provide evidence in court that he had enriched himself and his family instead of asking him to declare his wealth.

“By doing so, my wealth will be known all over the world. However, Anwar also needs to declare (his wealth).”

Mahathir recently filed a RM150 million libel suit against Anwar over the latter’s accusations, saying it has eroded his status as a statesman and former prime minister.

He went on to say that he has been left puzzled by Anwar’s recent claims, including the one about past leaders who had enriched themselves through corruption, adding he should haul them to court if he had proof.
