Kuala Muda district police chief Zaidy Che Hassan said the police rushed to the location after receiving a report from the public at about 5.47pm.
“After arriving at the location our men found the body of a woman wearing only a night gown. She was not wearing any underwear,” he said in an Astro Awani report.
He said a witness informed him that he detected a foul smell from the back of his house, which he thought was coming from a toilet. However, the smell remained despite the witness then washing the toilet.
He said the witness then went to the back of the house and found the body of a woman in the drain.
Zaidy said the police forensic unit had examined the scene and the woman’s body was sent to Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim in Sungai Petani for an autopsy.
He said the case has been classified as sudden death as the autopsy results have yet to be released, adding that the police are still investigating the case.
Zaidy called on members of the public with missing family members, or information on the case, to lodge a report at the nearest police station.
