Egg importer sues Azmin for defamation

The Perikatan Nasional leader is alleged to have said the contract was awarded to J&E Advance Tech Sdn Bhd via direct negotiation.

Azmin Ali is alleged to have made the claim against the company during a Perikatan Nasional ceramah in March.
KUALA LUMPUR:
An egg importer has filed a defamation suit in the High Court against former minister Azmin Ali for claiming that it was awarded a contract to import eggs from India via direct negotiation.

J&E Advance Tech Sdn Bhd’s lawyer, Elyse Ng, said a copy of the writ of summons has been served to Azmin’s office.

The suit came after the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader failed to respond to the company’s letter of demand against him earlier this month.

During a PN ceramah last month, Azmin is alleged to have said the government awarded the project to import eggs from India through direct negotiation.

J&E Advance Tech claimed that Azmin’s remarks were defamatory and had implied that it was a dishonest company.

They further alleged that Azmin’s remarks against them were done in bad faith and it was an attempt to incite the public against them.

J&E Advance Tech is seeking general, exemplary and aggravated damages from Azmin.

The company also sought an injunction to restrain Azmin from repeating the impugned remarks.

Ng said the High Court fixed May 16 for case management.

Earlier this month it was reported that J&E Advance Tech intended to sue Azmin for RM20 million in damages for defamation.
