KUALA LUMPUR:
The transport ministry is developing an application and other digital methods for cancelling motor vehicle registrations online without having to go to the road transport department (JPJ).

Deputy minister Hasbi Habibollah said this is aimed at overcoming the dumping of motor vehicles that are no longer suitable for use on the road.

“The ministry, through JPJ, is ready to work with the relevant agencies to study this matter, including the disposal of vehicles that are not roadworthy,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

“The implementation of this disposal system will improve road safety, reduce pollution from vehicles that have been around for a long time, and boost demand for vehicles that will contribute to the sustainability of the country’s automotive sector.”

Hasbi said motorists can still visit JPJ counters to cancel their motor vehicle registration while the application is being developed.

He said this in response to a question from Sany Hamzan (PH-Hulu Langat) about the government’s efforts to manage the disposal of ELVs (end-of-life vehicles) in an environmentally friendly manner.

Asked by Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok) whether the move will affect vehicles which are more than 10 years old, Hasbi said the measure would only involve vehicles that are no longer roadworthy.

“Only the owners know whether their vehicle is safe to drive or not because they are the ones driving them,” he said.
