KUALA LUMPUR:
Top Bersatu leaders did not provide any details on the arrest of the party’s treasurer-general Salleh Bajuri by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), when met yesterday.

“I don’t even know what he was arrested for,” Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu told FMT when met after a Bersatu meeting at their headquarters in Publika last night.

Meanwhile, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said an official statement will be released regarding the matter, urging everyone to be patient for the time being.

“What’s the problem? There’s no problem. We know we didn’t do anything wrong. Just wait,” he said.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki yesterday confirmed Salleh was arrested on Wednesday and remanded for two days.

A Bersatu source said Salleh’s arrest involved investigations into the Jana Wibawa programme and Akar Umbi Pemacu Negara (AkuPN) online application.

Jana Wibawa was a Covid-19 stimulus initiative to help Bumiputera contractors, while AkuPN was an initiative launched by Perikatan Nasional (PN) in 2021 to help youths get jobs, attend upskilling programmes, or start their own businesses.

Meanwhile, when asked about Pejuang’s application to join PN, Hamzah, who is also the PN secretary-general, said the matter was still being discussed.

Yesterday, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir said Pejuang’s central executive council had decided to apply to PN and had sent an application letter to its chairman, Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the council decided that it was not enough for Pejuang to only form an electoral pact with other parties or coalitions to avoid seat clashes.

“It would be more beneficial for all parties involved if Pejuang joins PN and contests under the PN logo,” Mukhriz said in a statement.
