Pastor Koh’s legacy lives on through trust fund for needy

The fund was established shortly after his disappearance and is being used to assist the underprivileged.

Pastor Raymond Koh’s wife, Susanna Liew, said the trust fund is used to conduct baking classes for single mothers and the underprivileged.
PETALING JAYA:
More than six years after his disappearance, Pastor Raymond Koh’s social advocacy work continues through a trust fund set up in his name by family and friends.

Set up in May 2017, the Pastor Raymond Koh Trust Fund has three core objectives — to support his family, continue his social work and advocate on his behalf.

Koh’s wife, Susanna Liew, said it was important to continue the social advocacy work of her husband as the underprivileged were in need of help.

“If we do not help, the next generation will be adversely affected. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to look after those less fortunate and try to help them break the cycle of poverty, that will help them earn extra income,” she told FMT.

Koh was abducted in early 2017 under suspicious circumstances.

In 2019, the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) concluded after a public inquiry that he was a victim of enforced disappearance, carried out by the state, specifically by the police Special Branch.

Liew conducts baking classes for single mothers with the help of her son and daughter.

After her husband’s disappearance, Liew continued to operate a reading centre in Taman Sri Manja where her daughter and a staff member conducted tuition classes for undocumented children who were unable to attend regular school.

Liew said she continues to hold cooking and baking classes for single mothers with the help of her son and daughter.

The reading centre had to be closed after inactivity brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the trust fund continues to operate and has been used to provide assistance to refugee families, she said.

The fund’s trustees include Liew, lawyers Kenny Ng and Ong Theng Soon, and Pastor Chan Ah Kee.

Liew said the trustees look after the funds and disburse it when there is a need to. To ensure accountability, all trustees must first approve of the use of funds before it is disbursed, she added.
