He said the commitment was in line with a resolution adopted at the party’s general assembly last month.

“So, when we (said that we’ll) support this government, it means Anwar is the prime minister (until the end of his term) … so that the country will be stable,” he told reporters today.

Ahmad, who is also deputy finance minister, made his remarks in response to the royal address at the opening of Parliament this morning.

In his speech, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, said he wished Anwar to be the last person to be appointed as Malaysia’s prime minister during his term of office.

Sultan Abdullah’s five-year term as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong ends on Jan 30 next year.

Ahmad, who is MP for Pontian, urged other MPs to not only respect the King’s wishes but also ensure that political stability is achieved.

He said the political arena was now stable with the formation of the unity coalition government, which has the backing of 148 MPs, or more than a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Since the general election (in) 2004, only now (do) we have this much majority,” he said.

In his address to Parliament today, Sultan Abdullah welcomed the consensus reached by the coalition government, which is in line with his desire for a stable and strong government.

He urged all parties to accept and respect the results of the 15th general election, held in November last year.
