KULIM:
As voters go to the polls in Padang Serai, 75-year-old P Govindasamy has only one wish, that whoever is elected will help him obtain disability benefits after the election.

The former estate supervisor has been struggling with his application for a disability (OKU) card since 2015.

OKU card holders enjoy benefits such as allowances, tax relief and discounts.

Govindasamy, who uses a walking stick, dislocated his knee after falling from a flight of stairs seven years ago.

“I voted for the Pakatan Harapan candidate (Sofee Razak) as he promised to get OKU cards for disabled voters here.

“He even took down my details when I met him (on the campaign trail),” he told reporters at SK Bukit Selarong after casting his ballot this morning.

Abdul Razak Ishak with his wife Kamariah Salleh.

Another voter, Kamariah Salleh, 58, also hopes the next Padang Serai MP will help disabled people like her husband, Abdul Razak Ishak, 62.

Razak, who suffered a stroke two years ago, was among those who came out to vote today.

The former estate worker is unable to speak or use his left hand, and sfffers from high blood pressure and diabetes.

“I hope that whoever gets elected here will provide those like my husband with some financial aid,” said Kamariah.

The battle for Padang Serai will see a four-cornered contest among Sofee, Azman Nasrudin (Perikatan Nasional), Hamzah Abd Rahman (Pejuang) and independent candidate Ananda AK.

Two other candidates from Barisan Nasional and Warisan are also on the ballot but have withdrawn from the race and urged their supporters to back Sofee.

The election was postponed following the death of the PH candidate and one-term MP, M Karupaiya, on Nov 16, three days before the GE15 polling day.

Polling ends at 6pm.
