Cop fined RM6,500 for accepting RM6,000 bribe

The former police station chief was charged with taking the money from an entertainment centre owner caught violating the MCO.

A former police station chief with the rank of sub-inspector was fined RM6,500 by the Ayer Keroh sessions court here today for accepting a bribe from the owner of an entertainment centre.

The owner was caught violating SOPs for the movement control order (MCO) enforced to control the spread of Covid-19.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan meted out the fine to Abdul Halim Alias, 59, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Halim, who was then chief of the Tengkera police station, was charged with accepting RM6,000 from the owner of an entertainment centre at Kota Shahbandar in Bandar Hilir as an inducement to prevent him from being prosecuted for violating the MCO.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code with committing the offence at the Tengkera police station between 5pm and 6.15pm on Aug 11, 2020.

Deputy public prosecutor Haresh Prakash Somiah prosecuted, while Halim was represented by lawyer Azrul Zulkifli Stork.
