Dropped by BN, Shahidan and Ismail get sweet revenge

Shahidan Kassim and Ismail Abd Muttalib, who were dropped from Umno, both won their seats on a Perikatan Nasional ticket.

Both Shahidan Kassim and Ismail Abd Muttalib successfully defended their parliamentary constituencies for the fifth term.

Shahidan Kassim and Ismail Abd Muttalib, dropped by Barisan Nasional as election candidates have got their own back when they won their seats contesting on a Perikatan Nasional ticket.

Shahidan was re-elected in Arau with a majority of 23,216 votes defeating BN candidate Rozabil Abd Rahman (8,242 votes) and Pakatan Harapan candidate Fathin Amelina Fazlie (7,089 votes).

The victory gave Shahidan, a former Federal Territories minister, a fifth term in Parliament.

Abd Muttalib, a former deputy minister for housing and local government, was re-elected in Maran with 19,600 votes, defeating BN’s Shahaniza Shamsuddin (17,779) in a four-cornered fight.

However, two former PAS leaders, Che Abdullah Mat Nawi and Khairuddin Aman Razali, lost their contests on BN tickets in Tumpat and Kuala Nerus respectively.

Che Abdullah, a former agriculture and food industries deputy minister, received 30,633 votes compared to Mumtaz Nawi of PN (65,426 votes) while Khairuddin lost with only 26,932 votes in a four-cornered fight.

Another BN discard, Zahidi Zainul Abidin was defeated as an independent candidate for the Padang Besar parliamentary seat and Titi Tinggi state seat.

In Padang Besar, he secured only 1,939 votes compared to Rushdan Rusmi (PN) who won with 24,267 votes while in the Titi Tinggi state seat, Zahidi also lost to his challenger Izizam Ibrahim (PN) in a six-cornered battle.

Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua and former DAP member Wong Tack who both contested as independent candidates, also lost. Chua was defeated in a 10-cornered fight in Batu and Wong in a five-cornered battle in Bentong.

Chua received only 3,798 votes while Wong got 798 votes in Bentong.
