Some voters in the constituency told FMT that they were satisfied with how Zuraida had served her constituents since she was first elected as Ampang MP in 2008.
The former PKR vice-president is seeking to represent the parliamentary constituency for a fourth term.
One man who wanted to be known as Pak Eddy described Zuraida as a diligent elected representative who was often on the ground.
Having been born and raised in Ampang, he said the PBM president-designate always prioritised the people.
He also denied that she had hopped parties in 2020 following the infamous Sheraton Move, pointing out that she was in fact sacked by PKR.
Two other locals, wanting to only be known as Angela and Mega, said they would continue supporting Zuraida due to her excellent performance as MP.
They added that she prioritised the people of Ampang, regardless of their background.
However, one Ampang voter who wanted to be known as Sugumaran voiced disappointment with how she had betrayed the voters’ mandate in GE14 by taking part in the Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in February 2020.
“I voted for her the last time, but this time I won’t be voting for her,” he said.
Zuraida won the Ampang seat on a PH ticket in GE14, garnering a majority of nearly 42,000 votes against candidates from Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS and Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM).
She was the housing and local government minister in the shortlived PH administration and continued to hold the same portfolio in the new Perikatan Nasional-led governnment with Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
After Muhyiddin resigned and Ismail Sabri Yaakob took over the top post, she was given the plantation industries and commodities portfolio instead.
In GE15, Zuraida is in a nine-cornered contest to defend her Ampang seat.
She will face Rodziah Ismail from Pakatan Harapan, Ivone Low (Barisan Nasional), Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif (Perikatan Nasional), Nurul Ashikin Mabahwi (Pejuang), Lai Wai Chong (Warisan), and three independent candidates, Tan Hua Meng, Shafiq Izwan Yunos and M Raveendran.
