Jeyakumar said, however, that the party had not received any response from PH so far, adding that it would be “very disappointing” if the coalition did not allow a PSM candidate to contest in Sungai Siput.
“It is a fairly minimal request. We have only asked for one parliamentary seat, which is Sungai Siput, and two state seats that are non-PH seats,” he told FMT.
He added that PSM had been in talks with representatives from PH about a proposed electoral pact but there had been no decision made by the coalition’s presidential council on the matter.
Earlier today, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim said a PKR candidate would, “for now”, be fielded in Sungai Siput. He added, however that negotiations for the seat were ongoing, without providing any further details.
Jeyakumar said until an official announcement was made, PSM would continue to hold out hope that it would contest the seat in GE15.
“We want at least one person from PSM to speak up on the various issues affecting marginalised communities, in Parliament. It is something that I think only our party can do because we are very well known to them,” he said.
He added that it would be difficult for other parties to attempt to address the issues affecting those from marginalised communities and the working class in the country.
“Until then, let’s see what they (PH) tell us. We will only know on Saturday,” he said.
It was previously reported that PSM did not intend to formally join PH as a component party and only sought an electoral pact for GE15.
Jeyakumar was a two-term Sungai Siput MP from 2008 to 2018. However, he lost to PKR’s S Kesavan in the 14th general election after talks broke down between PH and PSM.
MIC president SA Vigneswaran is also eyeing Sungai Siput, a seat that was held for eight terms by the late S Samy Vellu, the former MIC chief who lost to Jeyakumar in the 2008 general election (GE12).
