PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan is set to field a candidate from PKR for the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat, says the coalition’s chairman, Anwar Ibrahim.

However, the PKR president said negotiations for the seat are ongoing, adding that the outcome of talks have yet to reach him.

He did not specify who these negotiations are with.

“For now, it remains the same, a PKR candidate (will be fielded) there,” he told a press conference in Manjoi, Perak.

Previously, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) asked PH to allow its chairman, Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, to contest the Sungai Siput seat.

Jeyakumar was the two-time Sungai Siput MP from 2008 to 2018. However, he lost to PKR’s S Kesavan in the 14th general election after talks broke down between PH and PSM.

MIC president SA Vigneswaran is also eyeing Sungai Siput, a seat that was held for eight terms by the late S Samy Vellu.

PSM had said it was seeking an electoral pact with PH to allow “four or five” of its candidates to contest state and parliamentary seats under the PH banner.

It has no plans to formally join PH as a component party.

While PH has said it was working on an electoral pact with Muda, the progress of talks with PSM is not known.
